Five decisions to make before a patio pour
Use, transitions, finish, access and care belong in the conversation before concrete arrives.

- Confirm transitions and finish
- Record access and care
Resolve the patio plan
| Decision | Record before requesting a quote |
|---|---|
| Use | Furniture layout and clear walking space |
| Water | Where water currently collects and adjoining thresholds |
| Access | Gate width and landscape protection |
| Finish | Texture, color and maintenance expectations |
Start with everyday movement
Walk the proposed furniture and circulation arrangement on the ground without excavating. Note doors, steps and narrow routes. Explain who uses the space and any mobility needs. The installer can then assess the layout against the property rather than guessing from a square-foot total.
Describe existing water movement
Record where water collects and what surfaces meet the planned patio. Ask how grading and transitions will be resolved. Do not assume the new work can simply follow the existing ground. If other structures or drainage systems are involved, identify the appropriate professional before finalizing the scope.
Choose a finish you can maintain
Discuss texture and maintenance alongside color. Ask for samples, realistic variation and written care instructions. Clarify when furniture and foot traffic can return under the installer’s actual plan. Generic online timing does not replace those instructions.
Use the pre-placement check
Before confirming the work, check that the accepted scope names intended use, dimensions, transitions, finish and access. Keep any unresolved approvals or future structure plans visible. If the provider changes a detail, request the revised agreement before treating the change as accepted.
Put the guidance to work
Use the project planner to organize dimensions and questions. Keep the actual address ready for the provider; do not enter personal information here.
